Fractal Formula Tutorial Page 2 - How to write your own unique fractal formulas

Step 1

Fractal ImageOkay, are you ready?! Open the program and you should see the familiar Mandelbrot image. There are a couple of ways to open up the formula editor. You can select "Unique Editor Dialog" from the Draw menu on the top toolbar, or the easiest method, simply right click over the image and select it from the pop up menu.

Step 2

Fractal ImageAfter opening up the Unique Editor you will see several fields to enter data. The default formula, z*z+c, is shown in the main formula field. You can disregard the other fields for now. This default formula is for the classic mandelbrot image.

Step 3

Fractal Image I am often asked if this process is totally random. The answer is no! If you have gone through my other tutorials, you have already seen ways to get specific results. The formula process is the same, as we will see!

I will start by showing how you can get some basic fractal shapes, or forms, with various formulas. In the main formula field enter the following formula: z*z*z*z*z+c, and then hit the OK button.

Step 4

Fractal Image In this fractal you can see that we have created a 4-sided, or buds, fractal by simply adding "Z" parameters into the formula. This has totally changed the form by one simple change. Let's move on to page 3.
